Scratch Repair

A scratch never looks as small as it did the day it happened. Give it a Utah winter and a few trips through the car wash, and that little line in the clear coat starts to look a lot more serious. That's the repair we do most often at Unique Auto Body — and it's one of the easiest to get wrong if it's rushed.

We see everything from shopping cart scuffs to scrapes that cut clean through to bare metal. Some can be buffed out in an afternoon. Others need sanding, primer, and a full color-matched repaint to actually disappear. The only way to know which one you're dealing with is to look at it in person, so every scratch repair here starts with a technician actually inspecting the damage — not guessing from a photo.

How deep is it, really?

That's the first question, and it changes everything downstream.

A surface scratch sits in the clear coat only. If you can't catch a fingernail on it, there's a good chance we can polish it out without touching the paint underneath.

A paint-depth scratch has broken through to the color coat. These need to be filled and blended so the repair doesn't show a shadow or a ridge once it's done.

A primer or metal scratch goes deeper still, and it's the one you can't ignore. Bare metal exposed to Utah's road salt and moisture starts rusting fast — often within weeks, not months. If your scratch looks like this, getting it addressed sooner matters more than getting it perfect on day one.

What actually happens in the shop

The process looks simple from the outside, but the steps aren't interchangeable, and skipping one is usually why a scratch repair job looks "off" a year later.

We start by cleaning the area completely — wax, road grime, and any old touch-up paint have to come off first, or nothing sticks right afterward. If the damage goes past the clear coat, we sand the edges of the scratch so the repair blends into the surrounding panel instead of sitting on top of it as a visible patch.

From there it's primer, then color. Matching your car's paint isn't a matter of pulling a can off a shelf — factory colors shift slightly by production year and even by plant, so we pull the actual formula for your vehicle and verify it against the panel before spraying anything. Paint goes on in layers, each one given time to cure, and the job finishes with a clear coat that's buffed until the repaired section is impossible to pick out from three feet away.

Why it's worth doing properly

A scratch is rarely just cosmetic. Once it opens the clear coat, the metal underneath has lost its protection, and that's how a $150 fix turns into a rusted-out quarter panel down the road. Repairing it properly now is a lot cheaper than replacing a panel later.

It also matters for resale. A visible scratch or a bad DIY touch-up is one of the first things a buyer or an appraiser notices, and it tends to knock more off the offer than the actual repair would have cost.

Where to bring it

We run seven shops along the Wasatch Front, so there's likely one on your way somewhere this week:

  • West Jordan

  • Midvale

  • Midvale Central

  • South Jordan

  • Saratoga Springs

  • American Fork

  • Lindon

Every location gives free estimates, and our technicians hold I-CAR Gold Class certification along with manufacturer-specific training across more than 20 brands — useful to know if your scratch is on a vehicle with a more particular paint system, like a Tesla or a BMW.

If you're not sure whether your scratch needs a quick polish or a full repaint, bring it by. It costs nothing to find out, and you'll walk away with an actual answer instead of a guess.
