ADAS Explained: What Your Car's Safety Sensors Do, and Why They Need Calibration After a Repair
If you have bought a car in the last decade, it is almost certainly watching the road alongside you. There is a camera mounted behind the rearview mirror. There is radar sitting behind the front bumper cover. There are sensors in the side mirrors, in the rear quarter panels, at each wheel. You may never think about any of it until the day the car brakes before you do, or nudges the wheel back when you drift toward a lane line on I-15.
That equipment has a name: ADAS, short for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. More than 90% of new vehicles sold today come with at least one of these features built in, and most drivers could not point to a single sensor on their own vehicle. This article is meant to close that gap. Not because you need to understand the engineering, but because there is one practical thing worth knowing: these systems only work when they are aimed correctly, and ordinary repairs can knock them out of aim without giving you any indication at all.

What ADAS actually covers
ADAS is an umbrella term rather than a single component. Depending on how your vehicle is equipped, it may include:
Automatic emergency braking — applies the brakes when a frontal collision looks imminent
Forward collision warning — alerts you before the system needs to intervene
Adaptive cruise control — holds a set following distance instead of a set speed
Lane departure warning and lane keep assist — flags or corrects unintended drift
Blind spot monitoring — the icon that lights up in your side mirror
Rear cross-traffic alert — watches for approaching vehicles as you back out of a stall
360-degree and backup cameras — required equipment on new passenger vehicles since 2018
Each of these depends on a physical sensor pointed at a very specific piece of the world. And they do not operate in isolation. A forward camera and a front radar unit often share responsibility for the same feature, cross-checking each other. When one drifts out of position, the effect can show up somewhere you would not expect.
Where the sensors live on your vehicle
Placement varies by manufacturer, but the common locations are consistent enough to be worth knowing:
Windshield — forward-facing camera, behind the mirror mount (lane keeping, collision warning)
Front bumper or grille — radar unit (adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking)
Rear bumper — blind spot and cross-traffic sensors
Side mirrors — cameras for surround view and, on some models, blind spot detection
Wheels — speed sensors feeding stability and braking systems
Steering column — steering angle sensor

Look at that list and you may notice something. Nearly every one of those locations is a place that gets touched during a collision repair or a routine service visit.
The repairs that trigger a calibration
This is the part that surprises people. Calibration is not something you request because the car feels wrong. It is required based on what work was performed, according to the manufacturer's own published procedure. Common triggers include:
Collision repair, including minor fender damage
Windshield replacement
Bumper removal or replacement
Wheel alignment or a change in tire size
Suspension or steering repairs
Frame and structural work
Side mirror replacement
Anything that changes ride height
A wheel alignment is the one that catches most drivers off guard. Adjusting alignment changes the vehicle's thrust angle, which changes where a forward-facing camera is actually pointed relative to the road. Different tire sizes change ride height, which does the same thing. The camera never moved. What it is looking at did.
Requirements vary by make, model, and the specific work performed, so the honest answer to "does my car need this?" is that it depends on your vehicle and your repair. That is a question worth asking your service advisor directly.
Why one degree matters
Here is the number that makes the case better than any explanation.
A forward-facing sensor that is off by a single degree is looking about one foot away from its intended target at 60 feet. At 180 feet, that error grows to roughly three feet. Three feet is the width of a lane marking. At freeway speed, it is the difference between a system recognizing the vehicle ahead of you and reading it as being in the next lane over.

Your dashboard will probably stay dark
This is the most important thing in this article, so it gets its own section.
A misaligned sensor usually does not set a warning light. The system still powers on, still runs its self-checks, still reports that it is present and functioning. What it cannot tell you is that it is aimed a degree and a half low. Manufacturers base calibration requirements on the work performed for exactly this reason — not on whether a diagnostic scan returns an error code. A clean scan is not proof that a system is calibrated.
So the vehicle drives normally. The features appear to be there. And you find out otherwise in the one moment you were counting on them.
How calibration is actually performed
There are two methods, and a fair number of vehicles need both.
Static calibration takes place indoors. Manufacturer-specified targets are positioned at exact distances and heights in front of the vehicle, on level flooring under controlled lighting, and each sensor is reset with factory-grade scan equipment. Static procedures generally run somewhere between thirty minutes and an hour per system.
Dynamic calibration happens on the road. Diagnostic equipment stays connected while the vehicle is driven at specified speeds so the system can re-learn its references from real lane markings and real traffic.
Which one your vehicle requires is not a judgment call. The manufacturer's procedure for your specific make, model, and repair determines the method — which is why access to current OEM procedures matters more than the brand of equipment on the shop floor.

Common questions
Does my vehicle have ADAS? If it was built after roughly 2010, it likely has at least one system. Backup cameras have been standard equipment on new passenger vehicles since 2018. Your owner's manual will list what your specific trim includes, or we can check for you.
What does calibration mean, exactly? It is the process of aiming and re-referencing the cameras and sensors your safety features depend on. If the software is the brain, calibration makes sure the eyes are pointed the right direction.

How long does it take? Static calibration typically runs thirty minutes to an hour per system. Dynamic calibration can take longer depending on road and traffic conditions. Vehicles needing multiple systems recalibrated take proportionally more time, and we will give you an estimate up front.
What happens if I skip it? The vehicle will drive. The safety systems may not perform as designed, and nothing on the dashboard will tell you so. There is also a resale consideration: the next owner has no way of knowing the systems were left uncalibrated.
